Skimmark Privacy Policy

Skimmark is in development and is not yet available to download or buy. The parts of this policy about the Site apply now; the parts about the App and buying Skimmark apply once it is.

This policy explains what information YOB Holdings LLC ("we", "us") collects through skimmark.com (the "Site") and the Skimmark desktop app (the "App"), and what we do with it.

The short version:

  • The App does not send your files to us, and it has no telemetry, usage analytics, or crash reports. Your files stay on your computer.
  • The App is designed to make two kinds of network calls: a license check and an update check. Both are described below as planned for release; they are not built yet.
  • The Site uses a web analytics service to see how visitors use it. The Site's analytics does not use cookies.
  • Gumroad will handle payment. We never see your card number.

1. The App

What stays on your computer

Your Markdown files never leave your computer because of the App. The App also stores its own data in its own folder on your computer. That includes your settings, open tabs, license status, and "Seen Snapshots" (saved copies of a file's content from the last time you marked it seen, used to show what changed). We cannot see any of this. You can delete it by removing the App's data folder. The help docs show where this folder is on each system.

What the App does not do

The App does not send us telemetry, usage analytics, or crash reports. It does not fetch remote images inside your documents; it shows a placeholder with the link instead. When you click a web link in a document, it opens in your normal web browser, and that site's own privacy policy applies.

License check (planned)

This section and the next describe how the App is designed to work at release. These features are not built yet.

If you enter a license key, the App will contact Gumroad, our planned sales channel, to activate it. After that, it will re-check the key about every 7 days. This check will send your license key and the product ID. It will not send a device identifier. Like any internet request, it will also reveal your IP address to Gumroad, and Gumroad's own privacy policy covers what it logs. Gumroad will use this to tell the App whether the key is valid, how many times it has been activated, and whether the purchase was refunded or the key turned off.

A license key is not tied to a user account. The App has no accounts.

Update check (planned)

The App will check skimmark.com for new versions when it starts and once a day while running. If an update exists, it will download it from skimmark.com. The update check will send no user, device, or license data. Like any internet request, our hosting provider can see your IP address and basic request details (such as the time and the App's request headers). You will be able to turn the automatic check off in settings.

2. The Site

Analytics

We use these services to understand how people find and use the Site:

Service What it does
Web analytics provider Two events: a page view, and "contact form sent" (without the form's contents). Each event carries the page address (without any query string or fragment), the referring page (also without a query string), your browser's user-agent string and language, and your screen and window size. Clicks are not tracked. The provider may work out an approximate location from your IP address.
Google Search Console Reports on how the Site appears in Google search. It gives us totals, not data about you as a person.

The Site's analytics does not use cookies or browser storage and does not build a profile of you. Session recording and heatmaps are off.

We do not use the analytics data to identify you by name.

Hosting

The Site and the App's update files are hosted on Vercel. Vercel processes request data such as IP addresses to serve the Site and keep it secure.

3. Buying Skimmark

Purchases will go through Gumroad, which will be the merchant of record. Gumroad collects your payment details, billing information, and email address, and handles sales tax and VAT. Gumroad's privacy policy covers that.

Gumroad shares some order information with us so we can support your license, such as your email address, the product bought, the date, the license key, and refund status. We never receive your full card number.

4. Messages to us

If you write to us through the contact form at skimmark.com/contact, we keep your name, email address and message, plus the page you sent it from and the page that referred you to the Site, so we can answer you and keep a record. The form files your message in our work-tracking tool.

5. How we use information

We use the information above to:

  • sell and activate licenses, handle refunds, and, where we can, help with device slots;
  • deliver App updates;
  • answer messages sent through the contact form;
  • understand and improve the Site;
  • keep the Site and licenses secure and stop abuse;
  • meet legal and tax duties.

6. Who we share it with

We share information only with the service providers described in this policy (our sales channel, hosting, web analytics, and contact-form tools) so they can do their jobs for us, and when the law requires it. If the business is sold or reorganized, the information may move to the new owner under this policy.

We do not sell your personal information.

7. How long we keep it

We keep contact-form messages as long as needed to answer them and keep a support record, order records as long as tax law requires, and analytics data for the retention period set in our analytics tool.

8. Your choices and rights

  • Analytics: you can use a tracker blocker to stop the Site's analytics.
  • Updates: you can turn off the App's automatic update check.
  • Access, correction, deletion: you can ask us to show, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you through the contact form at skimmark.com/contact. We will answer as the law where you live requires. We may need to confirm it is you first. Some data we must keep, such as order records for tax.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have more rights, including the right to complain to a data protection authority.

9. Security

We use reasonable measures to protect the information we hold. No method is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee security. App updates are checked against a signing key before they install.

10. International transfers

We are based in the United States. Our service providers may process data in the United States and other countries.

11. Children

The Site and the App are not aimed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us information, tell us through the contact form at skimmark.com/contact. We will look into it and delete the information where the law requires.

12. Changes

We may update this policy. We will post the new version here and change the "Last updated" date. If a change is material, we will post a notice on the Site before it takes effect.
